Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about UK fuel prices, fuel types, and how Cheapest Fuel Finder works.
We aggregate fuel price data from the UK Government's open data initiative, which requires major fuel retailers to publish their prices. We update this data twice daily and display it in a simple, searchable format. Just enter your postcode or town and we'll show you the cheapest forecourts nearby.
Prices are updated twice daily from the official data feed. Retailers are required to submit their prices each day, so the data is typically no more than 24 hours old. Bear in mind that prices can change between updates, so always confirm at the pump.
E10 is the standard unleaded petrol sold at UK forecourts since September 2021. It contains up to 10% renewable ethanol, which helps reduce CO2 emissions. E10 is compatible with most cars built after 2011. If your car is older, check the gov.uk E10 compatibility checker.
E5, often sold as "Super Unleaded" or "Premium Unleaded", contains up to 5% ethanol and has a higher octane rating (typically 97-99 RON vs 95 RON for E10). It's recommended for older vehicles that aren't E10-compatible, and some performance cars benefit from the higher octane.
B7S stands for standard diesel (containing up to 7% biodiesel) — this is the regular diesel you'll find at most forecourts. B7P is premium diesel, such as Shell V-Power Diesel or BP Ultimate Diesel, which contains cleaning additives and may improve engine performance.
All fuel sold in the UK must meet the same British Standard (BS EN 228 for petrol, BS EN 590 for diesel). Supermarket fuel like Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons meets the same base quality requirements. Branded fuels from Shell, BP, and Esso often contain additional proprietary additives, but the base fuel is the same standard.
Several factors cause price variation: location (motorway stations are typically more expensive), competition (areas with more forecourts tend to have lower prices), brand positioning (supermarkets tend to be cheaper than branded stations), and local supply costs. Prices can vary by up to 15p per litre within just a few miles.
Yes, completely free. We don't charge anything, we don't show adverts, and we don't sell your data. Our goal is simply to help UK drivers save money on fuel.
We cover over 7,000 forecourts across the UK, including all major brands: Esso, BP, Shell, Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Texaco, Jet, Gulf, and many independent stations. The data comes from retailers with 10 or more UK sites who are required to report their prices.
Price alerts are coming soon! You'll be able to set a target price for your area and preferred fuel type, and we'll notify you by email when prices drop below your target.
