Commute Fuel Optimizer
Planning a daily commute or a long drive from London to Scotland? Enter your start and destination postcodes and we'll find every fuel station along the route — plotted on a map and sorted by distance so you can pick the best stop for where you'll actually need fuel. Avoid expensive motorway services and save hundreds per year.
How It Works
The Commute Fuel Optimizer geocodes your start and destination postcodes, then draws a search corridor between them. It finds every fuel station along the route and shows them all — sorted by distance from your start point and plotted on an interactive map. You can switch to price sorting with one click.
The corridor width scales automatically with journey length: narrow for short commutes (1.5 miles either side) and wider for long drives (up to 4 miles either side) to catch stations just off motorway junctions. Every station is checked against live price data from the CMA open data feed, updated daily.
Why Commute Stations Matter
Most drivers fill up out of habit — either at the station nearest to home or the one they pass on the way to work. But fuel prices can vary by 10p or more per litre between stations just a mile or two apart. Over a year, switching to a cheaper station on your existing route can save £200 to £400 without adding any extra journey time.
Tips for Maximum Savings
- Supermarkets are usually cheapest — Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons consistently undercut branded forecourts by 3 to 8p per litre.
- Avoid motorway services — motorway stations charge a 15 to 25p premium. If one appears in your results, skip it in favour of a nearby alternative.
- Fill up mid-week — prices tend to be slightly lower on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at some forecourts, though the effect is modest compared to choosing the right station.
- Check prices regularly — fuel prices change daily. Run this tool once a week to make sure your chosen station is still the cheapest on your route.
- Combine with loyalty cards — if two stations are similarly priced, pick the one where you earn loyalty points (e.g. Nectar at Sainsbury's, Clubcard at Tesco).
- Track your real MPG — use our MPG calculator to know your actual fuel consumption, which makes the savings estimate more accurate.
Understanding the Savings Calculation
The annual saving is calculated as: (your current price − cheapest price found) × tank size × fills per month × 12. If you do not enter a current price, the tool uses the average price of all stations found along your route as the baseline. The actual saving depends on how often you fill up and how large your tank is.
Limitations
The route is approximated as a straight-line corridor between your two postcodes. Real roads curve and pass through different areas, so some stations that appear “on route” may require a small detour, while others just off the corridor might be missed. For the best results, use postcodes that are at least a few miles apart.
