About Premium Diesel (B7P)

B7P premium diesel is the enhanced diesel grade at UK forecourts. Like standard B7S, it contains up to 7% biodiesel, but adds proprietary additive packages that include detergent cleaners, friction modifiers, and anti-foam agents. It also has a higher cetane number (55 to 60 vs 51 to 53 for standard), meaning smoother ignition.

When It Makes Sense

Premium diesel can be beneficial for older diesel engines with high mileage (80,000+ miles) where injector deposits may have built up, vehicles used regularly for towing or carrying heavy loads, and high-performance diesel cars driven hard. For these cases, running two or three tanks of B7P can help clean the fuel system.

For most everyday driving, standard B7S diesel is the better financial choice. For the full breakdown, read our premium diesel guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is B7P premium diesel?

B7P is premium diesel sold at UK forecourts — products like Shell V-Power Diesel, BP Ultimate Diesel, and Esso Synergy Supreme+ Diesel. It contains up to 7% biodiesel plus proprietary additive packages for engine cleaning and improved combustion.

How much more does premium diesel cost?

Premium diesel (B7P) typically costs 18 to 20 pence more per litre than standard diesel (B7S). On a 60-litre tank, that's an extra £10.80 to £12 per fill-up, or £280+ per year with fortnightly fills.

Is premium diesel worth the extra money?

For most everyday driving, no. The 1 to 3 percent efficiency gain doesn't offset the 18 to 20 pence per litre premium. It can help clean injectors in high-mileage engines or benefit vehicles used for heavy towing, but a £5 bottle of injector cleaner achieves similar results.

Which premium diesel brand is best?

Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate and Esso Synergy Supreme+ all perform similarly in independent testing. The differences between brands are small — if you choose to use premium diesel occasionally, any major brand will provide comparable cleaning and performance benefits.
