About Standard Diesel (B7S)
B7S is the standard diesel available at every UK forecourt. It contains up to 7% biodiesel (FAME — fatty acid methyl ester) blended with mineral diesel, meeting the EN 590 European specification. This is the diesel most UK drivers use daily.
Standard vs Premium Diesel
Premium diesel (B7P) — sold as Shell V-Power Diesel, BP Ultimate Diesel, and similar — costs 18 to 20 pence more per litre. It contains extra cleaning additives and has a higher cetane number, but independent tests show only 1 to 3% efficiency improvement — far too small to justify the price premium. Saving Money on Diesel
The same rules apply as for petrol: compare prices before filling up, default to supermarket forecourts, and avoid motorway services. Our fuel savings calculator can show you how much switching to a cheaper station would save annually. For more tips, read our guide to saving money on fuel.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is B7S diesel?
B7S is standard diesel sold at UK forecourts, containing up to 7% biodiesel (FAME). The "B7" refers to the biodiesel percentage and "S" stands for standard. It meets the EN 590 European diesel standard.
Why is diesel more expensive than petrol?
Despite the same fuel duty rate, diesel is more expensive due to higher refining costs, stronger European demand, and a more complex production process. The wholesale price of diesel tends to be higher than petrol.
Should I use standard or premium diesel?
Standard B7S diesel is fine for most vehicles and most driving conditions. Premium diesel (B7P) costs 18 to 20 pence more per litre and the efficiency gains are too small to justify the price. Consider a £5 bottle of injector cleaner every 5,000 miles instead.
Where is diesel cheapest?
Supermarket forecourts are consistently the cheapest for diesel. Asda, Costco, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons typically undercut branded stations by 5 to 10 pence per litre.
