Today's Fuel Prices by Type

UK fuel prices are reported under the CMA transparency scheme across four main grades. Use the links below to compare current prices for each type:

What Drives UK Fuel Prices?

The pump price is made up of four components: fuel duty (currently 52.95p per litre), VAT (20% on the final price including duty), the wholesale cost of fuel, and retailer costs and margin. See our current UK fuel duty rates and tax calculation.

Day-to-day changes are driven by wholesale oil price movements and the pound-dollar exchange rate. Larger shifts come from OPEC decisions, refinery outages, and seasonal demand. Read our guide to why prices vary for the full breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How up to date are today's fuel prices?

Our prices are sourced from the CMA open data scheme and updated every 15 minutes. Retailers are required to submit their prices each day, so data is typically no more than 24 hours old. Prices may change between updates.

What affects fuel prices day to day?

Short-term price movements are driven by wholesale oil price changes, currency exchange rates (oil is priced in US dollars), and retailer pricing decisions. Larger shifts are caused by OPEC production decisions, geopolitical events, and seasonal demand patterns.

Is fuel reliably cheaper on a particular weekday?

There is no dependable nationwide cheapest weekday. Individual forecourts change prices at different times in response to local competition and wholesale costs, so compare current nearby prices before travelling rather than waiting for a fixed day.

Where can I find historical fuel price data?

Our station pages show 30-day price history charts. For national and regional trends, browse our location pages for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which show average prices and recent changes.

How much of the fuel price is tax?

Fuel duty is 52.95 pence per litre, plus 20% VAT on the final price including duty. At a pump price of £1.50 per litre, that is 77.95p of combined tax, or about 52% of the price.
